The numbers illustrate the scale of the shift.


Deloitte's 2026 Engineering and Construction Industry Outlook identifies data centers and energy infrastructure as a major source of industry momentum. While several traditional commercial construction categories have softened, AI-related data center investment continues to support engineering and construction activity. Deloitte estimates U.S. data-center power demand could increase from approximately 33 gigawatts in 2024 to 176 gigawatts by 2035.


And data centers aren't simply technology projects. They're enormous construction projects requiring sophisticated electrical systems, cooling infrastructure, backup generation, substations, mechanical systems and supporting infrastructure.

That means unprecedented demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, pipefitters, welders, equipment operators and other specialized trades.


The Associated General Contractors of America's 2026 outlook reinforces the trend: despite more tempered expectations across construction overall, contractors remain particularly optimistic about data centers and power facilities.


One Megaproject Creates a Workforce Ripple Effect


The challenge isn't confined to the project itself.


When a billion-dollar data center, semiconductor plant, battery facility or energy project breaks ground, it can pull thousands of skilled workers into a single market. Contractors then compete not only with companies working on similar megaprojects, but with virtually every other employer seeking those same trades.


The result is a workforce ripple effect.


Electricians who might traditionally work on commercial projects move toward data centers. Welders and pipefitters migrate toward energy and advanced manufacturing projects. Experienced traveling tradespeople follow attractive wages and per diem opportunities from one major project to another.


Suddenly, workforce planning becomes a strategic issue—not simply a recruiting function.

For construction executives, the question increasingly becomes: How do we put the right people in the right place at exactly the right time?


Traditional recruiting processes weren't designed for the speed, specialization and geographic mobility today's megaprojects demand.
